The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the world.
Pride and being one's authentic self is not limited to one month, but is a year round state of being. In challenging times when the community is under attack it is important to speak truth to power. Those who are silent are complicit.
We will add to this collection regularly, but this is where you can find some of the most iconic graphics from the last 30 years. In response to the AIDS crisis the Silence Equals Death project was formed. From ACT-UP's site:
"In 1987, six gay activists in New York formed the Silence = Death Project and began plastering posters around the city featuring a pink triangle on a black background stating simply ‘SILENCE = DEATH.’ In its manifesto, the Silence = Death Project drew parallels between the Nazi period and the AIDS crisis, declaring that ‘silence about the oppression and annihilation of gay people, then and now, must be broken as a matter of our survival.’ The slogan thus protested both taboos around discussion of safer sex and the unwillingness of some to resist societal injustice and governmental indifference. The six men who created the project later joined the protest group ACT UP and offered the logo to the group, with which it remains closely identified."
We offer the iconic SILENCE=DEATH graphic on tees, tanks, t-shirts, hats, and pins and are proud to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Ali Forney Center in its efforts to protect LGBTQ youth. In the fall of 2018 with our winter in Miami, an awareness of the large latino population around the globe and a nod to spanish speakers, we have added; SILENCIO=MUERTE, a concise way of saying: "el silencio es igual a la muerte".
The iconic READ MY LIPS graphics from Gran Fury are featured on tees and tanks supporting Rainbow Railroad in their efforts to help LGBT people escape state-sponsored violence. We feature a graphic of two men kissing and two women kissing. The two women kissing first appeared in Gran Fury's Kissing Doesn't Kill: Greed and Indifference Do project in New York City, 1989.
Also supporting Rainbow Railroad is our eight color rainbow pin inspired by Gilbert Baker's original rainbow flag.
There are two items featuring the work of Anonymous Queers. Our "army of lovers" tee and a reproduction of a patch originally created in 1991. Given the times we are living in it seemed the time is ripe for reproducing these works. The badge features the pink triangle and the message "DON'T TREAD ON ME". The t-shirt features an excerpt from "QUEERS READ THIS", a leaflet distributed at pride march in NYC, Published anonymously by Queers in June 1990. The excerpt titled "AN ARMY OF LOVERS CANNOT LOSE" was printed on pink paper and handed out at pride. 10% of proceeds from the sale of these t-shirts will be donated to the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art
A recent addition in October 2018 is in direct response to the headline in the New York Times that read: ‘Transgender’ Could Be Defined Out of Existence Under Trump Administration we were horrified, but not surprised. Trans rights are human rights! Our first graphic specifically within this collection was created by the Board of PFLAG in Oklahoma City and is featured with their blessing. "Nobody suffers when we extend protection and recognition to everyone. In fact, we're all better for it." We could not agree more and 10% of proceeds from the sale of these t-shirts will be donated to the Trevor Project; "the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25."
Also featured in this collection are various pins, patches and hats with a queer sensibility. For STONEWALL50 we are excited to add graphics from Brian Kenny and HOMO RIOT benefitting the Trevor Project.
