The story

The source graphic for this tote is courtesy of ONE Archives at the USC Libraries. it was taken from a poster created by San Franciscans Against Proposition 6 in 1978.

"When your rights are on the ballot get your body in the booth.  Register to vote today."

California Proposition 6, sponsored by John Briggs, a conservative state legislator from Orange County, and better known as the Briggs Initiative, was the first attempt to restrict the rights of lesbian and gay Americans by popular referendum. It was a ballot initiative put to a referendum on the California state ballot in the November 7, 1978 election. The failed initiative sought to ban gays and lesbians from working in California's public schools.

We are excited to bring some historical graphics into our assortment in collaboration with and supporting One Institute.  10% of the proceeds are being donated to One Institute. The One Institute is "an independent 501(c)(3) dedicated to telling the history and stories of queer and trans people and culture through public exhibitions, K-12 educational initiatives, and community engagement programs.

One Institute is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit and the oldest active LGBTQ+ organization in the U.S. It focuses on preserving queer and trans history through art, public events, and school programs. They also manage the world's largest collection of LGBTQ+ materials in partnership with USC and oversee the AIDS monument in West Hollywood. Adam's Nest's collaboration with The Gay Rub / Steven Reigns — featuring a rubbing from the gravesite of Frank Kameny — donates 10% of proceeds to One Institute.
